Keys Please: Perception

"Brand is just a perception, and perception will match reality over time. Sometimes it will be ahead, other times it will be behind. But brand is simply a collective impression some have about a product."
-Elton Musk

How important is perception? When is perception altered? Are we in charge of our perception of others? Do we really influence others perception of ourselves? How powerful is perception? James Salter states, "You can write about other people and their ideas and life without having lived it, but even your perception of that is going to be colored by what you know and what you experience. And this is undeniable." Perception can sometimes be viewed as reality and perception is able to create a culture. Many people would state that they could careless about others perception of them, but then walk, talk, dress or just plain live a certain way. This "certain way" can be determined by "society's" perception.

Perception is the act or faculty of perceiving, or apprehending by means of the senses or of the mind, and to perceive is to recognize, discern, envision, or understand. Perception in layman's terms to myself is the act of recognizing, discerning or understanding by means of senses or of the mind. If this is the case, then why shouldn't I place perception within the psychological realm or as a mental attribute. Why is perception so important if everyone's mental discernment are different? Does perception create a collection of people's thoughts in order to place people within certain boxes? I ask these questions because I always hear "their perception of you" or "that may not be how you are, but what's important is how they perceive you to be".

Well, why should I care? Because I have realized; while we can't change the way people think, we can't change their morals, their values, their cultures, or many other factors that will influence their reality, you will come in contact with people and perception will play an important role, especially if you are considering creating your own brand or working for someone else brand.

Yes we can influence other's perception of us, but it is sometimes out of our realm the perception that they develop, which again boils down to backgrounds, morals, and life experiences that influences one's views. However, it does change how you feel about yourself and other's views of you when you have displayed actions that you would prefer to be considered when influencing other's perceptions. I believe it creates a happiness inside of yourself, that is hard to alter, when other's create a perception that is not completely based on your actions but more so on their mental understandings of reality (I think that was the easiest way for me to break that down, hopefully it makes sense).

This is the importance of creating a certain brand within yourself and exhibiting that brand. At that point, you know that you are being true to yourself. I think the word perception influenced me to create a blog. There were so many thoughts going through my head and I was hearing so many perceived notions from others about myself. (i.e. being single, no kids, highly-educated but not working in my "correct" career field, physically and emotionally detached, and so many others) that I wondered if I had or presently have my own perception of myself. While this doesn't conclude my thoughts on perception, it opens up floodgates to discussions on branding, life, being single, and many other perceptions.
